The Sea Turtles in Difficulty

From an ecological perspective Panama is a very important country bridging the two American continents and bordering over 2000 miles of coast line of both the Pacific and Atlantic ocean. With an abundance of beaches and archipelagos Panama used to house a large variety of sea turtles nestling its beaches. Today in both oceans, the majority of the sea turtle species face extinction due to poachers that kill the turtles with a knife for her shell, leather and meat.

There are still some beaches left that offer protection against the poachers, but these beaches are recently bough up by foreign development companies for tourism or residential real estate projects. These new development projects scare the turtles and withhold them from laying their eggs during the breeding season. Therefore it is our mission to protect the beaches of Panama in order to save the fast declining population of sea turtles in the world.

How do we protect the turtles?

1.      Raising Awareness with our Turtle Education Program so that local communities will protect turtles and their nests. In exchange for turtle friendly behavior we offer the local communities financial incentives and labor.

2.      Protect the Beaches and create wildlife refugees by taking strategic ownership positions at the beaches, introduce legal penalties against turtle haunters and patrol the beaches during the breeding seasons with our well trained Turtle Police.

3.      Assist and Educate Tourism and Residential Developers around the beaches of Panama to develop their projects according to our sustainable and ecological development standards in order not to disturb the turtles during the breeding season. Ecologically managed projects can apply for our Turtle Save Certificate.
